Dental Hand Scaler - pattern H6/

A double ended instrument.

The two ends are mirror image to give a left and right (complimentary) curvature..

Curettes are modified hand scalers which have smaller “toes” (working area) with rounded tips. A balanced grip handle which has a large diameter for comfortable grip and good control.

Uses

  • To scale subgingivally (remove calculus below the gumline and in periodontal pockets) and to perform root planning (remove redundant, necrotic cementum).
  • They may also be used supragingivally on light calculus deposits
  • Periodontal pockets over 2mm should be cleaned with hand instruments (dental curettes) rather than power scalers.
  • How to use

The instrument is held in a modified pen grip.
    • The toe is placed against the tooth surface with the flat face at 90 degrees so that the sharp edge contacts.
    • Repeat overlapping stokes are used. The movement is from the base of the pocket (gingival attachment) towards the tip of the crown.
    • Sharpening

      • The working side of each end should be maintained with a sharp edge for efficient and effective action.
      • The curette should be sharpened frequently (after only several uses) to freshen up the edge.
      • Sharpening is achieved using a fine Arkansas stone with oil using the same action as when scaling teeth.
